Perhaps the most unforgettable moment was standing in the Placa del Cap de la Vila, the historic heart of Sitges. It’s where several streets intersect, and the procession was funnelling through this bottleneck. As the first float entered the square, a hush fell over thousands of people who felt absolute. The only sound was the rhythmic drag of feet, the occasional scrape of a staff, and the soft crackle of wax.

The contrast between the Catalan approach and the louder, music-heavy processions of Andalucia was striking. This silence was the point. It was a space for reflection, mourning, and community. From the moment I heard about this event, I knew I had to be there. And let me tell you, it exceeded all my expectations. The picturesque streets of Sitges, in the heart of Catalunya, Spain, became a vibrant stage for one of the funniest and most unique spectacles I have ever witnessed.

The energy was contagious. People crowded along the route, eager to see the teams push their homemade vehicles with as much speed and, above all, originality as possible. From the doors of the historic Casino Prado, where it all began, to the finish line at the Passeig de la Ribera, every stretch of the race was an explosion of colour and laughter. The teams, dressed in the most ingenious costumes, paraded with their beds on wheels, each decorated with a theme more wild than the last.

It was incredible to see how imagination had no limits. Some beds looked like spaceships, others were castles, and there was no shortage of references to pop culture characters. The music, the cheers, and the majestic presence of the Carnival Queen, the Children’s Queen, and His Majesty King Carnival leading the procession created an atmosphere that can only be described as pure Catalan joy. The route through Carrer de Jesus, Cap de la Vila, and Parellades was a whirlwind of excitement, with unexpected turns and hilarious accidents that made the crowd burst into laughter.

It was a day full of laughs, wonder, and that unique feeling of being immersed in such a living and special tradition. It is an experience that celebrates community, creativity, and above all, the ability of people to have a great time. Stepping onto Carrer de la Diputació, one is immediately confronted by the solemn mass of the Barcelona Conciliary Seminary. Located centrally in the bustling Eixample, this building offers a stark contrast to the district’s usual perimeter-block housing. It is a work of scale, historical gravity, and intentional austerity—a physical manifestation of authority designed by the renowned architect Elies Rogent i Torra.

Elies Rogent (1821–1897) was a towering figure in Catalan architecture, bridging the classical tradition and the emerging Modernist sensibility. The design of the Seminary, executed around the same time as his other colossal project, the main building of the University of Barcelona, showcases his mastery of historical revivalism. The entire complex proudly follows the lines of medieval architecture, embracing the Neo-Romanesque style that was so fashionable at the time. This was a deliberate choice to evoke the solid, sacred sincerity of Catalonia’s early religious heritage, contrasting with the often perceived frivolity of contemporary urban trends.

The Seminary’s urban placement is perhaps its most compelling and unique feature within the Eixample. Instead of adhering to Ildefons Cerdà’s standard model of filling the block’s perimeter, Rogent placed the massive complex squarely in the centre of the block. The entire composition is laid out in a distinct Greek cross plan (four equal arms), with the Cimborrio marking the composition's absolute centre.

This strategic placement created four resultant empty building spaces in the block’s corners—spaces that were initially designated as gardens. This layout creates a semi-monastic internal environment, organised around courtyards, deliberately separating the spiritual world of the Seminary from the secular clamour of the city, much like a medieval cloister.
