A Week Full of Photography: Exploring Spain's Historic Corners
From Barcelona's Gothic Alleys to Peñíscola's Castle Walls, My Camera Captured the Soul of Spain
This past week, I found myself captivated by the vibrant and historic cities of Spain. My journey began with a glimpse into the coastal town of Sitges, capturing the classic charm of its train station with its vibrant yellow trim and traditional arches. The photograph is a prelude to the beaches and lively streets that await beyond the tracks.
I also spent some time in Peñíscola, where I was struck by the historical presence of the bronze statue of Papa Luna. Seated on a rocky outcrop with the ancient castle walls as a backdrop, the statue of Pope Benedict XIII is a powerful and dramatic figure, telling a story of a controversial leader and his enduring legacy.
The gardens of Papa Luna Castle were equally inspiring, with ancient stone walls contrasting beautifully with lush, vibrant greenery and swaying palm trees, creating a harmonious blend of history and nature. I was also drawn to a historical tableau at the fortress, a detailed display of life-sized soldiers loading a bronze cannon against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, offering a vivid look into the castle's military past.
In Peñíscola's old town, I got lost in the timeless charm of its alleyways. One photograph captures a narrow street with whitewashed walls, colourful potted plants, and laundry swaying in the breeze. Another image shows serene, whitewashed stone steps flanked by lush greenery, inviting you to slow down and appreciate the quiet Mediterranean beauty.
Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter was a constant source of inspiration. I stumbled upon a hidden gem in a narrow alleyway, capturing an intimate scene with cobblestones, old buildings, and plants on balconies. Another photo takes you on a journey into a timeless alleyway, where reflections on a wet cobblestone street capture the serene and atmospheric moment. I also found a unique blend of cultures in the city, with a photograph showing Cuban flags draped over a narrow street, creating a scene of cultural fusion and urban charm.
Daily life in the Gothic Quarter provided another authentic scene, with laundry hanging to dry between ancient buildings and a bright blue door adding a pop of colour to the worn stone walls. The quarter's impressive architecture was highlighted in a photograph of a narrow alley framed by a grand arched passageway. Finally, I captured a classic scene in a Bari Gothic alleyway, where history and daily life intersect, with worn stone buildings, whimsical lights, and a modern bicycle resting against a grand archway.
