Girona in Bloom: A Journey Through History, Flowers, and Fleeting Expectations
Exploring History and Horticulture at Temps de Flors
The Catalan sun, a generous painter of warmth and light, beckoned me back in May of this year. My compass pointed north, away from the familiar rhythm of Barcelona, towards the ancient city of Girona. The whispers of "Temps de Flors" – Flower's Time – had reached my ears through enthusiastic friends, their recollections painting a vivid picture of a city transformed into a breathtaking floral canvas. The promise of this annual spectacle, a celebration of spring's exuberance intertwined with Girona's rich history, was irresistible. A swift, modern chariot – the high-speed train – effortlessly bridged the distance, delivering me to my destination in a mere thirty minutes or so, a testament to Catalonia's seamless blend of the old and the new.
Girona, even without the floral adornments, possesses a magnetic charm. Its layers of history are palpable, etched into the weathered stones of its medieval walls, whispered through the narrow, winding alleys of the Call (the Jewish Quarter), and reflected in the tranquil waters of the Onyar River, where a row of pastel-hued houses stands like a vibrant watercolour painting. The imposing silhouette of the Girona Cathedral, with its remarkably wide Gothic nave, dominates the skyline, a silent sentinel that has witnessed centuries of the city's ebb and flow.
It is against this backdrop of historical grandeur and architectural beauty that Temps de Flors unfolds each May. For nine days, the city surrenders itself to the transformative power of flowers. Monuments that have stood for centuries are embraced by vibrant blossoms, forgotten courtyards awaken with intricate floral designs, and even the most unassuming corners burst forth with unexpected bursts of colour and fragrance. This is not merely a decoration; it is a dialogue between nature and culture, a temporary reimagining of urban space through the ephemeral beauty of the floral kingdom.
The origins of Temps de Flors are more modest than the grand spectacle it has become. It began in 1955, almost serendipitously, with a small flower exhibition organized by the Girona City Council. The initial aim was simple: to showcase the region's horticultural prowess and to add a touch of beauty to the city in springtime. This inaugural event was held at the Municipal Theatre and featured a modest collection of local flowers and plants. It was a local affair, a gentle nod to the season's renewal.
