Travelling to Europe in 2025? Don’t Forget Your New ETIAS Visa!

If you’re planning a vacation in Europe next year or beyond, there’s a new travel requirement you need to be aware of: the European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS. Starting in May 2025, Americans, Brits, and travellers from 60 other non-EU countries will need to apply for this preauthorization before entering Europe’s Schengen Area. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth journey.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a new online travel authorization designed to enhance security across the Schengen Area—a group of 27 European countries that have abolished passport control at their mutual borders. ETIAS isn’t a visa, but it functions similarly by checking visitor information against various security databases before granting entry. This system is part of the European Union’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its border security while keeping travel convenient for millions of tourists.

How Does ETIAS Work?

Applying for ETIAS is straightforward. The application process is expected to take about 10 minutes and can be completed entirely online. You’ll need to provide basic personal information and travel details and answer security-related questions. Once submitted, your application will be cross-checked against various EU security databases, and in most cases, you’ll receive approval within minutes.

The cost for ETIAS is relatively low—just $8 per application. Once approved, ETIAS will allow you to travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180 days. This means you can hop from Paris to Rome to Amsterdam without worrying about border checks between these countries, just as you’ve done before.

Who Needs to Apply?

ETIAS will be mandatory for travellers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and 58 other countries that currently do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area. It’s important to note that ETIAS only applies to countries within the Schengen Zone. If you’re visiting Ireland or Cyprus, which are EU members but not part of Schengen, you won’t need to apply for ETIAS.

Important Dates to Remember

  • November 10, 2024: Before ETIAS goes live, the European Union will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES). This system will require all travellers to submit biometric data—fingerprints and facial recognition—when entering and exiting the Schengen Area. The EES is another layer of security aimed at modernizing and streamlining border checks.
  • May 2025: ETIAS is expected to launch officially, though delays are possible. Once active, travellers will have a six-month window to apply before ETIAS becomes mandatory for entry.

Preparing for Your Trip

To avoid any last-minute surprises, make sure your passport is up to date. Your passport should be less than 10 years old and valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from Europe. If your passport meets these criteria, your ETIAS application is unlikely to be denied.

The ETIAS application is quick and easy, but it’s wise to apply well in advance of your trip. While approvals are usually fast, it’s best to avoid potential delays that could disrupt your travel plans.

Planning Your Journey

With the launch of ETIAS, now is the perfect time to start planning your European adventure. Whether you dream of the beaches in Spain, the art in Italy, or the history in Germany, this new system is just a small step to ensure a safe and seamless journey across Europe.
