The origins of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep are steeped in legend and folklore, intertwining the mystical with the historical. According to local lore, the temple’s founding dates back to the late 14th century, during the reign of King Nu Naone of the Lanna Kingdom. As the story goes, a revered monk named Sumanathera, in possession of a relic believed to be a shoulder bone of the Buddha, embarked on a journey to find a suitable resting place for this sacred object.

Legend has it that the relic miraculously split into two pieces upon reaching Doi Suthep mountain. One piece was enshrined at Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, while the other was carried by an elephant to the mountain’s summit. There, amidst the dense jungle and mist-shrouded peaks, the elephant is said to have trumpeted three times before succumbing to exhaustion. Interpreting this as a divine sign, King Nu Naone ordered the construction of a temple on the site where the elephant fell—a temple that would come to be known as Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
