When you are in Buenos Aires, you really should make a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento. It is a city in southwestern Uruguay, by the Río de la Plata, facing Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is one of the oldest towns in Uruguay. To get there, you can take one of three ferries leaving from Buenos Aires, Argentina: “Buquebus,” “Seacat Colonia,” or “Colonia Express.” I took Buquebus, spent a day walking around the town, had some great food, and returned to Argentina in the evening.
Colonia del Sacramento is renowned for its historic quarter, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are a lot of beautiful old buildings and streets. The historic quarter retains its irregular, terrain-fitting street plan built by the Portuguese, contrasting with the broader, orthogonal calles in the newer Spanish area. There is a lighthouse that offers great aerial views and a waterfront with plenty of restaurants. It’s very different from Buenos Aires across the river.
